I say that we talked, but it was not as before. In the old days we talked of everything under the sun, sometimes arguing, sometimes agreeing, but never lacking in subjects. In those days, when all three of us were constantly busy at our various pursuits, there was always news and gossip and discoveries to be exchanged. But now Eleanor did nothing. Her notes, manuscripts and paintings gathered dust in her study. She no longer served on committees or worked for charities. She gave no soirées or garden parties. Once her energy had seemed boundless. Now she rose late, went to bed early, and seemed to spend most of her waking hours in an uneasy dream.
